The Most Harmful Ingredients in Skin Care

There is a big dirty secret about today’s skincare and beauty products that many big cosmetic companies don’t want you to know. A huge number of the creams and lotions that women spend endless money on are actually accelerating the aging process, all while under the false advertising of being natural

Today there is a huge lack of regulation on what cosmetic companies say is in their products, and what they’re able to call organic.

Did you know that the FDA does not regulate the use of the term organic when it comes to advertising skincare products?

If that’s not enough to get your attention, did you know that some of the most common ingredients in popular skincare products are also the most dangerous?

Today, our goal is to fill you in on the truth about some very scary facts about what’s inside of far too many popular cosmetic products, and most importantly, how you can protect yourself

The truth is, a number of common skincare products contain harmful chemicals that prematurely age your skin.

The reason for this is shocking and unfortunate; simply to keep you buying more products and making money for big cosmetic companies that don’t really care about their customers’ health.

Every time you leave your home, toxins are already attacking your skin. What if the products you are using to protect you are actually wreaking havoc on the appearance of your skin and your health.

The result?

You’re forced to keep buying more products to try and reverse the effects, turning to expensive treatments and maybe even plastic surgery.

From environmental stress, to improper diet, to chemical-laden skincare products, there are many factors that can negatively impact the health and beauty of your skin. You can control premature aging and keep your skin balanced and vibrant, but you need to know what to look out for.

We’re here to help.

When it comes to how you treat and feed your body, along with what you put on your skin, there are many daily decisions that affect how you look and feel. Toxins enter your body through environmental stresses, food and through your skin.

Though the Food and Drug Administration keeps tabs on the quality of our food supply, it’s not safe to assume that because a cosmetic product is sold in a store that it’s automatically good for us. In many cases, quite the opposite is true.

It’s up to each person to educate herself on what to look for when buying cosmetics, and how our diet and activities can impact our health both internally and in visible ways like through the appearance of our skin.

The only way to stop the vicious cycle of buying more ineffective products to fix bad skin, begins with education.

The source of a healthy, youthful complexion starts long before the problems emerge. However, chemical-laden cosmetics, overexposure to sun, dehydration and other factors all play a role.

You can read up on how your lifestyle affects your skin, but today we’re focused on the absolute most important chemicals that you must avoid in order to protect your skin.

Here are some of the most important factors to premature aging of the skin, and what you can do about them.

Enemy 1: The Irritants

There are a staggering number of known irritants common in personal care and cosmetic products. While these chemicals are reported to be used for a variety of reasons, what they all have in common is that they irritate and inflame the skin.

So, while this list is purported to be beneficial to the products that contain them, in reality they create more of a problem for you—which is really aimed at creating a need to buy more products that don’t work. Here are the worst offenders that you should avoid at all costs when choosing cosmetic products.

Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates:

At the top of the list of irritants to watch out for comes these chemicals are detergents that often found in foaming face cleansers, shampoos, body washes and soaps. These proven irritants are absorbed by the skin and retained in the eyes, brains, heart and liver and may contain carcinogens including ethylene oxide.

Lauryl Sulfate is considered by many to be the most dangerous ingredient in skincare products today. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most common. When choosing a cleanser for your skin, watch out for this.

Synthetic Dyes and Fragrance:

When you’re looking at many skincare products and makeup items, you’ll see a number of vague ingredients that don’t leave much for you to understand what they really are. This is because if you really knew what they were, you wouldn’t dare put them on your skin.

Colors you see listed as “CI” followed by a five digit number or with names like “FD&C Blue No. 1” or “Blue 1” are coal tar dyes used to color cosmetics. These irritate the skin, are toxic to the brain and may cause cancer. Natural alternatives can provide color for skin and makeup products.

It’s pretty disturbing to think that cosmetic companies who know full well the potential risks of these materials are continuing to sell women products that can and do harm them.

Sadly, it get’s worse.

Synthetic fragrances or “parfum” can hide literally hundreds of chemicals and are the leading causes of irritation and allergic reaction from cosmetic products. They are mainly used to mask the scent of other chemicals. There is a growing list of health problems associated with these potentially toxic chemicals.

Synthetic dyes and fragrances are used to mask the real appearance and smell of cosmetic products. Just imagine what they’re hiding. If your skincare products don’t naturally smell pleasant, that should alert you to the real truth about the product.

As many as 200 different chemicals can be hiding in your cosmetics labeled as nothing more than “fragrance”–disgusting.

Enemy 2: The Preservatives

It should come as no surprise that many of the preservatives in food and cosmetic products can have a toxic effect on the body and skin. These are chemicals that are added to food and skincare products to extend their shelf life. While there are certain safe preservatives like Phenoxyethanol that are included to keep your skincare products viable for long enough to enjoy their use, there are a number of others to watch out for that are NOT your friend.

Formaldehyde releasing preservatives:

First on the list of culprits are these uglies. This list includes DMDM HYDANTOIN, DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA, METHENAMINE, QUATERNIUM-15 and SODIUM HYDROXYMETHYLGLYCINATE.

If the names alone aren’t enough to make you shiver, the truth is they have no benefit to you whatsoever–they’re only used to keep products on the shelf longer. These formaldehyde-releasers are used in many cosmetics to extend their shelf life and prevent product sellers from having to replace expired inventory.

BHA and BHT:

Next up on the list of preservative offenders are BHA and BHT. These include BUTYLATED HYDROXYANISOLE and BUTYLATED HYDROXYTOLUENE that are also used as preservatives in cosmetics. These too are known to cause allergic reaction, hormone imbalance and long-term exposure causes risk of thyroid disease.

No anti-aging skincare product or any other cosmetic is worth that risk. Avoid these preservatives for your health!

Enemy 3: The Artificial Conditioners

There is another notorious group of chemicals that are added to skincare and cosmetic products to give the product a certain appealing texture that many of us are used to.

These are the chemicals responsible for the smooth textures that we often associate with “good” moisturizers–and we are often mistaken. More often than not, this is a misleading trick designed to make a product look and feel a certain way–not to make it work for your skin’s health.

Here are the ones to watch out for.

Siloxanes:

The first of these artificial conditioners to watch out for are silicone-based compounds designed to create the soft textures of many products and can include: CYCLOTETRASILOXANE, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, CYCLOHEXASILOXANE and CYCLOMETHICONE. These are known to cause hormone imbalance and negatively affect the immune system.

Just think about that for a moment. Is the texture of your lotion worth risking hormone imbalance and damage to your immune system?

Unfortunately, a number of large cosmetic companies seem to think so. We disagree, and think you will too now that you know the truth.

Cocamide DEA and Lauramide DEA:

These too are used to give cosmetics a smooth texture and sometimes to adjust pH to balance out the high acidity of other ingredients. While they are incredibly common, they are known irritants and may also be carcinogenic.

Just imagine for a second that a company claiming to have a desire to help women look their best is actually knowingly selling products that contain scientifically verified carcinogenic chemicals. It makes us furious and you should be too. We decided to do something about this.

It has to stop, now. Here’s how we’re making the change.
